Can Dogs Eat Fig Newtons? What You Need to Know

When it comes to treating our furry friends, it’s essential to be cautious about what human foods we share with them. One popular snack that many people enjoy is Fig Newtons, but you may wonder, can dogs eat fig newtons?

What Are Fig Newtons Made of:

Before we discuss if it is safe to feed your dog fig newtons, let’s see what exactly is in them.

Fig Newtons are made of a filling made from ground figs encased in a soft cookie.  Some of the main ingredients in fig newtons are

  • Figs
  • Whole Grain Wheat Flour
  • Sugar
  • Unbleached Enriched Flour
  • Corn Syrup
  • Invert Sugar
  • Artificial Flavors
  • Preservatives

Of course, depending on what brand and whether they are homemade, it can effect the exact ingredients used.

Right off the bat, you will notice that you see 3 different types of sugars as ingredients.  While figs are a great source of natural sugar, fig newton cookies are packed with added sugar and corn syrups that can include high fructose corn syrup.

Sugary treats can lead to lots of health problems in your dog like diabetes, dental problems, an upset to their digestive system and even a higher risk of developing pancreatitis

Some brands of fig newtons even contain a preservative called sulfur dioxide which is known to be very dangerous to dogs especially in large amounts.

Are Fig Newtons Bad for Dogs?

Now that we know exactly what is in this tasty treat, we can make a more informed decision.  Is it bad to feed you dog fig newtons cookies?

Fig Newtons, like many human snacks, are not recommended for dogs. While the main ingredients in Fig Newtons, such as figs and wheat, are not inherently toxic to dogs, these treats contain much more that just that and they don’t really have any nutritional benefits for your pet.

Feeding you dog fig newtons on a regular basis gives your furry friend a higher chance of weight gain and can also produce other negative side effects.  Here are a few reason why adding fig newtons into your dog’s diet is not a good idea

High Sugar Content: If your dog consumes a lot of sugar, it can lead to obesity.  Another health complication that may arise as a result of your dog consuming too much sugar is diabetes.  Simply, dogs cannot tolerate a diet that is high in sugar.

Flour and Gluten:  Some dogs with sensitive stomachs cannot tolerate flour and gluten and it can cause allergic reactions and can lead to various digestive issues, allergic skin reaction and even an upset stomach.

Additives and Preservatives:  Like a lot of other processed foods, fig newtons have different additives and preservatives to give them a decent shelf life.  Some of such additives may pose health risks to dogs.  Always keep in mind that artificial sweeteners in particular, are toxic to dogs.

Can Dogs Eat Fresh Figs?

Yes, dogs can eat fresh figs.  Just like everything else, it is a good idea to only feed them in moderation since they contain a lot of natural sugar.  Figs are also a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Before offering figs to your dog, make sure to wash them thoroughly, remove the stem, and cut them into small, bite-sized pieces to avoid choking.

While fresh figs are generally safe for dogs and are somewhat a healthy treat, it’s essential to be aware that some dogs may  experience an allergic reaction  to certain fruits so it is best to keep an eye on them when feeding them anything new to make sure they don’t have any adverse reactions.

Alternative Treat Ideas for Dogs

There are many alternative treat options for dogs that are healthier and safer than fig newton cookies, fig bars or other human snacks.

Here are some dog-friendly treat options:

Fresh Fruits:

  • Apples (always remove the seeds and core)
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries (remove stems)
  • Watermelon (without seeds or rind)

Vegetables:

  • Carrot sticks
  • Cucumber slices
  • Green beans
  • Pumpkin (plain, canned, or cooked)

Meat-Based Treats:

  • Unseasoned and fully cooked lean meats like chicken or turkey
  • Freeze-dried meat treats

Dairy Treats:

  • Plain yogurt (without added sugars or artificial sweeteners)
  • Cheese in small amounts

Peanut Butter:

  • Peanut Butter is a tasty and safe treat for your dog.
  • Always check to make sure that your peanut butter does NOT contain xylitol as it is toxic to dogs.

It’s always best to choose dog-specific treats or foods that are known to be safe for dogs and to always consult with your veterinarian if you have concerns about feeding particular foods to your canine friend.
