Is Black Pepper Safe For Dogs to Eat? Or Is It Bad?

If you like to cook, then chances are you use a lot of black pepper to season your food.  Have you ever wondered, ‘Can dogs eat black pepper?’  In this post we will discuss the pros and cons of your canine friend consuming this famous seasoning.

Can Dogs Eat Black Pepper?

The short answer is yes, black pepper is safe for dogs to consume as long as it is done in moderation.  As with any human food, too much of it can be a bad thing for your furry friend.

Dogs will be perfectly fine as long as they eat only a small amount of black pepper.  But, you may wonder, ‘how much is too much?’

We must always keep in mind that the majority of dogs are much smaller than humans and their systems are completely different than our human systems.  So things that don’t cause health problems to us, can cause issues for them.

If you are cooking a dish that is seasoned with pepper, it can be perfectly fine to feed your dog a small bit of the cooked dish.  Now, if you spill a pile of pepper on the floor, I definitely would not recommend letting your canine companion clean it up.

It is best to keep black pepper, along with all other spices, up and out of reach of your dog.

Side Effects of Dogs Eating Too Much Black Pepper

As with anything, too much of even a good thing can be a bad thing.  Black pepper in itself is fine for dogs when consumed in small quantities.  But, if it is consumed in large quantities, it can have some side effects that can include

Burning Sensations

Even humans experience heartburn, a type of burning sensation or some type of stomach pain when they eat spicy foods or too much pepper and we should always keep in mind that dogs can experience the same kinds of symptoms as we do.

So, whether it is black pepper, cayenne pepper, chili peppers or any type of hot pepper, it is best to feed them to your dog in super small amounts or even not at all to avoid unnecessary pain for your dog’s stomach.

Respiratory Problems

This can start with sneezing.  I know that any time that I get a smell of black pepper by accident, I automatically start sneezing.  Sneezing is actually meant as a way to clear our airways of the substance that irritating them by forcing them out the nose.

If your dog inhales black pepper it can irritate the lining of their lungs which can then lead to asthma, bronchitis or other problems with their respiratory system.

Are There Health Benefits to Feeding Your Dog Pepper?

No, there are no benefits to feeding your dog black pepper.  Even if you were to feed your dog a large amount of black pepper (which is NOT recommended) there are no real health benefits to it.  It will just cause gastrointestinal issues or other health issues.

Especially,  when making treats or food specifically for your dog, it is ideal to just not use black pepper as there are basically little to no nutritional benefits.

When it comes to seasoning your dogs food, it is a good idea to keep all the seasoning to a minimum.  Also, be mindful of what table scraps that you feed your dog.

All extra foods and treats should make up no more than 90% of the dog food for your dog’s diet.

Types of Pepper

Green, pink and white peppercorns

Did you know that there are different kinds of pepper then just black peppercorns?  There are white peppercorns, pink peppercorn and even green peppercorns.  These different types of peppercorns are generally milder than black pepper but still have a lot of taste.

But, like the black peppercorns, these other types of peppercorns offer minimal nutrition.

Cayenne Pepper

This is a very spicy seasoning that may be very bad for your dog.  This along with other super spicy foods should be avoided in feeding your dog as they can cause harmful effects.

Lemon Pepper

This is another seasoning that is very popular that can be dangerous to dogs in larger amounts.  Be sure to keep this out of the reach of your canine friend too.

Peppercorn Sauce

Peppercorn sauce is a creamy, spicy and smoky sauce that can be made with green peppercorns, pink peppercorns, white peppercorns or the traditional black peppercorns.  It is yet another thing that you will want to avoid feeding to your canine companion.

Hot Pepper

This is yet another thing that can prove to be toxic in your dog if consumed in larger amounts.  Be sure to keep this out of your dogs reach!

Pepper and Dogs Q & A

What should I do if my dog eats black pepper?

It can depend on the amount of black pepper that your dog has consumed.  If your dog has eaten let’s say just a piece of chicken that had a little amount of black pepper on it as a seasoning, then your dog should be perfectly fine and you should not have to worry.

If you dog has consumed a very large amount of black pepper, you will want to watch him very closely.  If he shows any signs of stomach upset such as diarrhea or vomiting, you will want to contact your local vet and explain the situation to them.

You may wondering if your canine friends can have foods that contain salt and pepper.  As with anything else, small amounts of both salt and pepper is safe to give your dog.  You should never feed your dog human foods or treats that contain a large amount of salt or pepper.

Too much salt can be a bad thing for your dog as can too much pepper.  Your dog consuming an excessive amount of salt can lead to salt poisoning.

If you feed your dog table scraps or any kind of human food, make sure to do so very moderately.  A tiny amount of salt and pepper won’t hurt your canine friend, but excessive amounts can lead to health problems.

Is black pepper toxic to a dog?

Your dog consuming large amounts of black pepper can lead to respiratory issues and an upset stomach.  Only in severe cases of an excessive intake of black pepper could it prove to be toxic.

How much black pepper should I give my dog?

If preparing food specifically for your dog, I would omit the black pepper all together and not included it.

If you are wanting to feed your dog some table scraps and are worried about the small amounts of black pepper that they contain, I would not worry about it as just small amounts of black pepper pose no threat to your dogs health.

As with feeding your dog any new food, always do so with caution and lots of research prior to giving it to your dog.  Consult a vet about any problems or concerns that you may have about your dog’s health or concerns.
